Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNP) bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and are involved in transcript-specific packaging as well as alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs. hnRNPs also appear to influence mRNA metabolism and transport.
