Galnt1, also known as polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 1, is a member of the UDP-N- acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (GalNAc-T) family of enzymes. It catalyzes the initial reaction in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, the transfer of an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor. Also, this protein is involved in the glycosylation of proteins essential for bone formation such as osteopontin and bone sialoprotein.
