Superior DNA dyes for Gel Staining
GelRed and GelGreen from Biotium
Biotium developed red fluorescent GelRed® and green fluorescent GelGreen® as safer replacements for ethidium bromide.
Ethidium bromide (EtBr) has been used for decades to detect nucleic acids in agarose gels because it is inexpensive, sensitive enough for routine applications, and simple to use. However, ethidium bromide has been shown to be mutagenic in the Ames test and is potentially hazardous to laboratory workers and the environment. Many of the supposedly safe alternatives to EtBr are not mutagenic but cytotoxic.
GelGreen and GelRed nucleic acid stains from Biotium are non-toxic and non-mutagenic because they do not bind DNA in living cells due to their membrane impermeability.
GelRed Nucleic Acid Gel Stain
Biotium GelRed stain is an ultra sensitive, extremely stable and environmentally safe fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed to replace the highly toxic ethidium bromide (EtBr) for staining dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels or polyacrylamide gels. GelRed (41003) can also be used to stain polyacrylamide gels via post gel staining, and it is compatible with downstream DNA manipulations such as restriction digest, sequencing, and cloning. GelRed and EtBr have virtually the same spectra, so you can directly replace EtBr with GelRed® without changing your existing imaging system.
Features:
- Safer than EtBr: non-mutagenic and non-hazardous for disposal
- Much more sensitive than EtBr and SYBR® Safe
- Stable at room temperature and microwavable
- Simple precast or post-electrophoresis gel staining, no destaining
- Replaces EtBr with no change to equipment or optical settings
- Compatible with downstream gel purification, restriction digest, sequencing, and cloning

GelGreen Nucleic Acid Gel Stain
Biotium GelGreen stain is a sensitive, stable and environmentally safe green fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed to stain either dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels. GelGreen is far more sensitive than SYBR Safe. Unlike SYBR dyes, which are known to be unstable, GelGreen is very stable, both hydrolytically and thermally. GelGreen® is compatible with a 254 nm UV transilluminator, and can be imaged using a SYBR® Green or GelStar® filter.
Features:
- Non-mutagenic, for safer handling and easy disposal
- Much more sensitive than EtBr, SYBR® Safe, and others
- Extremely stable for storage at room temperature & microwaving in agarose
- Simple precast or post-electrophoresis gel staining
- Use with UV transilluminator or blue light gel reader
- Compatible with downstream gel purification, restriction digest, sequencing and cloning

DNAzure Blue Nucleic Acid Gel Stain
Biotium also developed a unique, visible blue DNA gel stain called DNAzure® Visible DNA Gel Stain, to visualize dsDNA in agarose or polyacrylamide gels by the unaided eye.Visualize DNA bands in gels without UV light sources. Detection is highly sensitive and rivals most fluorescence-based gel stains.
Features:
- Deep blue bands visible by the naked eye following 5-30 min bright light exposure
- Safer non-UV light sources eliminate the need for protective eye wear and expensive imaging equipment
- Ultrasensitive detection, as little as ~1 ng DNA
- Simplified DNA band excision, without the need for DNA-damaging UV light
- Bands are stable for weeks after color development
- Compatible with downstream applications such as sequencing and cloning
- Stain also can be imaged on LI-COR® Odyssey® or other near-IR imaging systems
