Human Protein Atlas: Expression patterns of human proteins

The Swedish Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project aims to map all human proteins in cells, tissues and organs and make this data available to scientists worldwide. During the corona crisis, the HPA committee is working to increase knowledge about human host proteins interacting with SARS-CoV-2. With the aim of making antibodies available for all mapped human proteins, the company Atlas Antibodies was founded in 2006 out of the HPA project. Angiotensin I converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)
The ACE2 receptor is the main entry point for the SARS CoV-2 virus into the lung (Hoffmann et al. 2020, Yan et al. 2020). ACE2 is mainly expressed on the surface of cells within the lung, i.e. on AECII cells (Yan et al. 2020) and a transient bronchial secretory cell type that changes from a secretory to a ciliary identity. These cells appear to be particularly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infections (Lucassen et al. 2020 in press).

Transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2)
The serine protease TMPRSS is a co-receptor for SARS-Cov-2 (Lucassen et al. 2020 in press) and a prerequisite for the priming of the SARS-Cov-2 spike protein (Hoffmann et al. 2020). TMRSS binds the same transient bronchial secretory cell type as ACE2 (Lucassen et al. 2020 in press).
